What is a periodontist?
A periodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses related to the gums and bone. They complete four years of dental school and then go on to three to seven additional years of formal training within their area of specialty. Periodontists also often specialize in implant dentistry. Dr. Long treats conditions from gum disease to gum recession yet is also able to expertly replace missing teeth with dental implants and implant supported dentures.
Why would I need a periodontist?
If you are exhibiting any symptoms associated with gum disease, such as bleeding gums, inflammation, bad breath, gum recession or shifting teeth, a periodontist can treat your infection with antibiotic therapy, scaling and root planing, laser gum surgery or osseous surgery. Typically, your dentist will refer you to a periodontist if he notices advanced periodontal disease.
Is laser gum surgery safe?
Yes, lasers have been safely and effectively used in dentistry for decades and have set a new standard in comfort, convenience and improved recovery. Dr. Long recommends laser gum disease treatment due to its ability to reduce discomfort, inflammation and healing times. It is also an ideal solution for our patients with dental anxiety because it eliminates the need for scalpels and sutures.
Why would I choose dental implants over dentures?
Dental implants offer a permanent, natural looking solution to tooth loss. While dentures are popular, due mainly to their lower cost, dental implants are a long-term solution which provides you with a beautiful smile that does not require additional cleaning rituals or diet restrictions. Implants feel very much like your own teeth which gives our patients greater confidence and comfort.
