The Stages of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease evolves in three stages, the first of which is completely reversible. When allowed to progress, the damage to your teeth, gums and bone can be devastating to your smile. Dr. Christopher Long is an expert in periodontal disease and can quickly assess and diagnosis the state of your infection:

Gingivitis

Gum disease symptoms appear gradually, beginning first with gum inflammation and sensitivity. This is a response to the bacteria that infect the gum tissue. Soon your gums will begin bleeding.

Periodontitis

If left untreated, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis. The bacteria that infected your gum tissue attack the connective fibers and bone that support your teeth. Deep pockets form around your teeth, providing greater access for plaque and bacteria. Gum disease symptoms at this stage may include bad breath, receding gums and tooth sensitivity.

Advanced Periodontitis

The connective tissue and bone have been damaged to the point that your teeth will loosen and shift. Immediate treatment is necessary to save your teeth in this final stage of gum disease which will continue causing damage without intervention.
